Combinign an obverse of Constantine I with a reverse for the Caesars
Lot 4555
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.38 g, 12 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate, irregular mint, after 325. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. VIRTVS CAESS / TARL Campgate with no doors and two turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 291-7 (for possible prototype). About extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, privately acquired from Spink & Son on 2 September 1999.

This is a mule, with an obverse for Constantine I combined with a reverse for the Caesars. The style is clearly unofficial, with a bust of Treveran style rather than that of Arelate, indicating a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. Moreover, no official camp gates from Arelate have a dotted border around the entrance.
